![]() OK, so I decided to accept that they were/are great in one particular application (HT), even though that wasn't why I bought them, and that's where I now use them and I've moved on in my search for speakers for my stereo. The Polk Signature Elite Series is the best deal we’ve found in a surround-sound speaker system. OTOH, I did not find them fun/musical/appropriate in my 2.1 music system. These are neutral speakers with great power handling capability that perform better as HT fronts than anything else I've tried. Where I ended up on this is, Elac gets no penalty, no foul from me. However, they are definitely disappointing, like you say, in terms of "musicality." These speakers are great in terms of being able to play loud without bottoming out and without distortion (as noted in Amir's review). You nailed it when you say that everything sounds like a PA system/sound reinforcement. Long story short, I now use them as front L & R in my 5.1 home theater setup. I'm quite pleased with the subtle color change as it allowed me to eliminate the drab, black cabinet color and make a speaker a bit more decor friendly in my living room.īrab, I don't think it's you and I don't think it's the Pioneer. This picture is of the "near-finished" job, with just the installation of the grill inserts to place back into the cabinet holes. Once the wet sanding was all done, I then carefully wiped the cabinets and applied 4 coats of satin water-based poly to the cabinets - allowing about 4 hours of dry time between the coats. I gently wet-sanded the cabinets with 600 grit paper, a sanding block and carefully adding water as needed to keep the surface damp while sanding. After applying 3 - 4 coats of paint, the surface was a bit rough due to the metallic components in the paint. I opted for a Krylon metallic paint designed for applying to plastic. I then used a 600 grit sandpaper to roughen up the finish a bit so the paint would stick. Disassembling the speakers took only about 10 minutes per speaker. I have been bored with the regular black vinyl wraps of the past, and decided to stir it up a little. However, I found a used pair, locally, with a few cabinet nicks on them - as well as holes in the bottom of the cabinets where the owner had installed screws - which meant for a couple of holes to fill. I had sold the other two pair off in the past because of a love-hate relationship. Last week, I opted for my 3rd pair of Elac B6.2 speakers. Headphones are optimally suited for analyzing tonal artifacts in a recording but completely distort distance perception." -LINKWITZ "Headphones are completely unsuited for judging the spatial rendering of a stereo recording that is intended for loudspeaker playback. Money doesn't buy pleasure ever."-Alan Watts "It's enormously important to understand that there is absolutely no possibility of having any pleasure in life at all without skill. Unfortunately very few of our current genre of acoustic tests have had this kind of introspection." - Geddes It is the perceived sound quality that matters not the measured quality – unless that measurement has been scaled and correlated to subjective perception through valid psychoacoustic tests. "Blind reliance on measurements can be misleading ‐ one needs to tie those measurements back to subjective perception. The room response gives a picture of the steady state SPL, where sound generation and sound dissipation in the room have reached their equilibrium." -Linkwitz The resulting curves must not be taken as a 1:1 representation of what is heard as loudness at different frequencies. " The room response must be averaged to recognize trends in the summation of direct and reflected signals at the microphone.
